CCDI helps local businesses to showcase at SARCDA and Jazz Festival

Our CCDI members were out in full force with our support this past month, showcasing a wide range of handmade designs – including ceramics, furniture, jewellery and fashion – at the SARCDA International exhibition and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. Both events are among the largest in South Africa, providing an excellent platform for sales for participating businesses, as well as giving them important networking and marketing opportunities.

Six CCDI members were selected by the Department of Small Business Development (dsbd) to participate at SARCDA International – the largest and only trade exhibition of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere – from 9 to 12 March at Gallagher Estate in Midrand.

These small businesses were Potina Ceramics; Fani Ceramics; Chic Fusion (wool felt products such as blankets, vases, tableware and fashion accessories); Feeling African (high end wire furniture); O’live Handmade Soaps; and Chimpel (leather bags). They participated as part of the South African Handmade Collection stand which was sponsored by the dsbd, and which showcased about 45 businesses from all nine provinces.

The show proved highly successful for our members as they collected orders from new as well as old buyers to the value of R253 736. They also had the opportunity to meet the Deputy Minister of Small Business Development who toured their stands as well as share their business development experiences as small enterprises.

Razaan Jakoet, owner of Chic Fusion said about her experience: “I was impressed by the overall visitor attendance and the keen interest in our products. Buyers were serious about making decisions at the show and they were ready to show their commitment by paying their deposits on the day.”

On 31 March and 1 April, a group of 11 talented emerging designers showcased at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival which took place at the Cape Town Convention Centre. ESP Africa, the event management company responsible for the festival, generously sponsored the space and stand build, enabling the CCDI members to participate in the market which we coordinated.

CCDI market support facilitator, Ayanda Bala-Nyamimba said: “We selected this particular group of creative businesses because their products are edgy, urban designs that are distinctly African and proudly made in South Africa, which we believed would appeal to the audience attending the festival.

The businesses on show included: OneofEach (handbags and other accessories); Carte-blanche (men’s shirts); Galago (handmade footwear); Creative Lines (gifts and products made from upcycled material); Sithabe Africa Craft/Indwe Designs (handmade beaded Nguni culture-inspired gifts, décor and jewellery); Deep Settle Movement (men and women’s wear); A Ring to It (jewellery); Tees and Gees (urban-inspired T-shirts); O’live (handmade soaps); Try Angelz (Afro-urban indie and street wear); and SAC Fashion Empire (Xhosa-inspired bags).

The Festival, which is also affectionately referred to as “Africa’s Grandest Gathering”, is the largest annual music event in sub-Saharan Africa, drawing over 37 000 music lovers from across the country and the continent over the two show days, and was a great platform for the businesses to get maximum exposure as well as excellent potential sales to festival goers eager to take away a souvenir of the event.
