Naturally Good gets a creative and market boost with CCDI

Naturally Good Traders supplies natural, environmentally friendly cleaning products for industrial and domestic use, as well as a personal care range which includes hair products and body washes.

The business recently launched its shop in one of the on-street kiosk spaces on Long Street in the Cape Town CBD. The kiosks are a joint initiative between the Western Cape Departments of Economic Development and Tourism and Transport and Public Works to enable entrepreneurs to showcase and sell their goods in the busy and vibrant heart of the city.

CCDI has a partnership with the Western Cape Government in which we facilitate the entry of creative businesses into two of the kiosks and assist them to the gain access to this potentially lucrative market, thanks to the high foot traffic volume in the street.

We spoke to the owner of Naturally Good, Glenda Pieters, about her business development process with the CCDI.  

What inspired you to start your company?

The idea came from our concern about the amount of harmful chemicals in normal detergents and personal care products. I did some research and learned about how these chemicals can harm our body and the environment. I also used to wonder what happens to water when it goes down the drain, and I realised that it goes into our rivers and the ocean. So we have developed a range of cleaning and personal care products with ingredients that will not harm the water and our ocean life. We have also taken care to make our products affordable so that they are available to as many people as possible – this way we can make them aware of how to take care of their health and the environment.

Tell us about your products...

They are manufactured in Parow Industria by an innovative, young chemist, and then we transfer them into packaging of different sizes that can be bought off-the-shelf.  We also add other natural ingredients such as lemongrass or Kraalbos – a plant that was traditionally used by the Khoisan for medicinal purposes. It’s an amazing anti-bacterial product that is wonderful for the skin. Therefore what we are doing is two-fold. First we are protecting people and our planet by supplying them with good, natural products and secondly, we have developed a personal care range that celebrates the indigenous Khoisan knowledge, and making people aware that traditional, indigenous medicine is still very relevant today.

How did the CCDI assist you?

I participated in the logo design workshop with creativity facilitator, Mara Fleischer to help me design a label for my Khoisan personal care range. We came up with a wonderful label and then I worked on developing the prototypes for the branding and packaging with help from the staff in the Product Support Space who were absolutely helpful and really inspired me.

I am really very excited about being selected to showcase our products in the kiosk on Long Street. I look at that space and I think to myself that we may be a small voice but we are a powerful voice spreading a very important message to look after the environment, especially water because we can re-use our grey water safely on plants and in our gardens.
