Two entrepreneurs kickstart their ecofriendly business, Naturally Good, from the Long Street kiosks

Concern about the environment led Glenda Pieters and Charlene Liedeman to develop a new range of cleaning and personal care products, Naturally Good. They sell from one of the on-street kiosks on Long Street, set up for emerging entrepreneurs to establish new businesses. Glenda tells us more.

Q: How did your business start?

A: We were concerned about harmful chemicals found in ordinary cleaning and personal care products. Our nephew, a chemist, researched and developed a range of natural products and we were his guinea pigs. From there, we wanted to market these safe, effective products. We received fantastic support from the Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) and I attended several courses and workshops there. The Khoisan Range is our newest range that is doing very well. Our intention is to make people aware of our amazing Khoisan indigenous knowledge and traditional remedies using plant ingredients, and to make them feel proud of their heritage. This is a 100% natural range of six products and we call it Products with a Purpose.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop?

A: We were fortunate to be chosen to use the kiosk by the CCDI team from among loads of entrepreneurs. This kiosk is ideal to market our brand and to introduce people in the city to caring for their health and the environment.

Q: How did you find your premises?

A: We're members of the CCDI and applied through them.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business?

A: The kiosk is surrounded by several government departments and we're hoping to interest them in our products. We're trying to make this area more customer-friendly and to promote buying local.

Q: Who are your neighbours?

A: Apart from The Coffee Guy and Bazz Collection, we have the Daddy Long Legs Boutique Hotel, and Embassy Travel. There are three kiosks still to be occupied.

Q: What are the rental prices like in this area?

A: We're fortunate to be rent-free and can use this space for a year. We're hoping to have a longer lease because it takes time to make your mark.

Q: How many people go through your store each day?

A: There is quite a bit of foot traffic and we're working on strategies to encourage people to stop and shop. People aren't familiar with shopping from the pavement. Most of our foot traffic are employees of the restaurants, shops and office blocks in the area. The rest are tourists, but they're a bit scared to linger in Long Street though. They feel safer in a shop. We're working on these challenges as well as the vagrant problem in the area, and are looking at ways to create a hub.

Q: Do you have any expansion plans?

A: We're using this opportunity as a stepping stone for our own shop one day. We're doing everything in our power to make this kiosk successful.

Q: Do you operate online as well?

A: We're busy with our new website which will have an online shop.

Q: What's your most popular item?

A: Our Eco Degreaser, Natural Hand Sanitiser and Eco Air Freshener.
