Seven of our CDI Western Cape members had the opportunity to showcase at Decorex Joburg, the
décor, design and lifestyle exhibition which took place from 8 to 12 August. Our Market Support team were on hand to assist the small businesses who joined producers from the other eight provinces to exhibit under the South African Collective banner, supported by the Department of Small Business Development (dsbd).

According to CDI Market Support Coordinator, Ayanda Bala-Nyamimba, the show was very successful for the businesses that participated this year.

“For some it was their first time at a prestigious event and a great learning experience for them. The Women’s Day theme made customers dig deep into their pockets as they bought gifts for the precious women in their lives.  Altogether our Western Cape producers made a total of R115 000 in sales. We appreciate the contribution made by the dsbd in terms of securing the floor space, professional stand build and event management, as this raised the bar for the sector and appreciation for local handmade products. It also allowed the participants to truly maximise the display of their products,” says Ayanda.

The Western Cape businesses also collectively won the ‘Decorex Excellence Award’ for their beautiful, well-made products.

Mathokoza Nhlapo of Sithabe African Crafts said about her experience: This year Sithabe's focus was mainly to market to local and international interior designers and stylists. This event gave us a good platform for this. There was excitement and positive reception of the products.”

Jewellery designer and owner of Indwe Designs,
Nondwe Nyathi said that Decorex was a good experience for her as it was her first time participating, and she was thrilled at the positive response her products received.

And Zikhona Tefu, owner of O’live Handmade Soaps said: “Decorex was amazing! We met a lot of our customers from previous shows and they were so thrilled to see us! It was also an amazing platform to meet new stockists, especially since we are trying to expand into Johannesburg. I think for us, beyond making sales there (which were very good), what was more important was all the leads for future business.”
