The BLC team will be using the information generated at the workshop to sense-check previous work and research, in order to generate practical building toolkits to assist intermediaries in upgrading informal settlements/ dwellings, and end-users who want to upgrade their own homes, in the areas of visual literacy, spatial literacy and passive design principles.

The Better Living Challenge (BLC) is a project of the Craft and Design Institute designed to surface local innovative solutions to pressing or persistent socio-economic challenges. The current iteration, BLC 2, focusing on surfacing solutions to incremental upgrading of informal settlements, is funded by the Western Cape Department of Human Settlements, and the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism.  At its core, the BLC is a problem-solving process. With the end user at the centre, it seeks to raise awareness, share knowledge, and incubate ideas and processes.

Please extend this invitation to your partners with practical insights into building structures, building materials, temperature control, fire proofing/ safety, passive design, drainage, plan literacy and community engagement.  More information and an outline for the day will follow next week.
