An approach by Turners Conferences to facilitate the recruitment of 27 CDI members to sell products at the annual Global Evidence Summit at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, has yielded an outstanding return of over R190 000 in sales for these businesses.

Turners Conferences were the organisers of the Summit, from 13 to 16 September, which brought together over 1 300 people from 75 countries to discuss addressing some of the world’s most serious health and social challenges.

The pop-up market at the Summit was one of our initiatives to assist small businesses to access new market opportunities, learn some valuable lessons from the experience, and make sales.

CDI Market Support Facilitator, Ayanda Bala-Nyamimba said about the event: “The enterprises that participated showcased a variety of beautiful products which were mostly fashion and accessories such as handbags and jewellery. It was very successful in that they all made sales which came to a total of R193 485, thanks to the busy foot traffic of the conference delegates. The enterprises were very grateful for this opportunity to sell and market their product to delegates from all over the world.”

Below is what some of our CDI members said of the opportunity:

Shemeema Brown of SHAMBROWN
“I was absolutely blown away by the event. It was more that I could ever imagine and ask for as a new trader. The international exposure was amazing and positive feedback from the delegates, all loving and admiring my bags, made it all worthwhile and so rewarding. I felt that it was an excellent platform for local entrepreneurs to showcase to the world what we have to offer and to showcase the creative spirit and vibrancy of our products and people.”

Francisca Tshuma of House of Rah
It was a well-planned event and I learnt a lot in terms of what customers need and what they don't.”

Marilyn Jones of Marilyn Jones Artwork

“It was a very successful event for my products. All of them were foreign buyers and I had very positive feedback from the delegates.”

Razaan Jakoet of Chic Fusion
It was well-organised by CDI as well as the event organiser. This was an excellent opportunity to get feedback from the international market.”
