Joseph Kalango is a CDI member and a senior architectural technologist, designer and model builder.

He believes architecture brings together ingenuity and creativity in efficient response to context and user spatial experience. He has applied his passion to a new model inspired by the vision of Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada, Fred Brownell designer of South Africa's beautiful flag and others who had bravely contributed to the architecture of a non-racial and non-sexist democratic South Africa.

“These values are epitomised in our national flag and the court of arms. However, it is noticeable that the colours of the rainbow are indeed fading away; people associate themselves with these symbols by virtue of being South African but few reflect on their real meanings. This design concept seeks to promote civic education, social cohesion and patriotism, and inform the rest of the world about this beautiful land and the people who live in it,” says Joseph.

His next step is technical detailing and construction of the object, which requires support. He is looking at two different scales, small and large.

“It is essential for this generation to pick up the baton and promote social cohesion, rule of law and respect of democratic values,” he says. His desire is to see people interact with it as a beautiful monument or as a beautiful object in public spaces.

“I would like to engage with the Department of Art and Culture to be involved, the Institute of Race Relations, Nelson Mandela and Ahmed Kathrada foundations and all NGOs that seek to promote social cohesion, respect of rule of law and democratic values among our people.”

Of the assistance he has received from the CDI, he says: “It is very difficult to find a platform to express yourself or just get support in terms of skills, especially for a small business. CDI is just that platform, and thanks to their many workshops, support and exposure I have been able to grow in confidence and other valuable skills in business.”
