It was a successful five days at Decorex Joburg this month for a group of seven CDI members who collectively secured over R90 000 in sales and orders. The seven creative businesses were part of the South African collective at Decorex and were each afforded their own stands thanks to the funding support of the national Department of Small Business Development (dsbd).

Decorex Joburg, which ran from 7 – 11 August 2019 at the Gallagher Convention Centre, gave thousands of visitors the opportunity to see the finest in local products and engage with the makers directly.

The opportunity was facilitated by the CDI Market Support programme, which facilities market opportunities such as local and international consumer and trade events, craft markets, pop-up stores at conferences and shows, as well as inward and outward-bound trade missions.

“The businesses were really thankful for the opportunity and were able to make valuable new contacts as well as good sales at the show,” says Ayanda Bala-Nyamimba, the CDI’s Market Support coordinator.

“For the first time exhibitors in particular, it was great experience in that they gained greater exposure in the Johannesburg market, and they gained confidence. The encouragement they received through positive feedback will help these businesses to take their next steps.”

Here’s what some of the participating businesses had to say:

“Novella Design had a great experience at Decorex JHB this year. We were fortunate enough to be a part of the CDI's Western Cape group participating in the event, and so valued the opportunity and support that the CDI offered, tailored to each of us that went along, to really make the event a success for each different business.

The event, itself, was a wonderfully practical way to understand the logistics involved in participating in an expo or trade show, with some experienced CDI staff to make it less daunting as a first-timer! The show was also a great opportunity to meet and engage with new customers, network with other creatives in the field, and grow our brand - through direct sales, new contacts and general exposure. The follow-up post-Decorex, with individual customers, decorators and designers, and wholesale orders has also been encouraging, and we're excited to see the future growth that continues to come from participating.” – Marieke Goncalves of Novella

“It was an eye opener as a first timer (participating at Decorex). It was very busy and it was full of inspiration.” – Phenyo Aubrey Seleke of a Heritage Legacy

“I really did not expect the way my products were received. It was a great experience – people were amazed by my products. I would really like to thank CDI for creating the platform for me. Without them I don't think I would have made it to Decorex. Also, a thank you to Department of Small Business Development for their support. Ayanda and Priscilla of the CDI were amazing – they gave us great support. I am so grateful for the support and opportunity.” Aretha Doyle of Cool Tabs

It's always amazing and exciting for me to take part in Decorex in Joburg. Most of my clientele are based there and I also got a chance to meet new customers and build strong business relationships. We received great compliments of how our products are well made and high end.” Nondwe Nyathi of Indwe Designs
