Introducing our Youth LaunchPad programme, bringing talented youth and creative SMMEs together to enable mutual growth

Note: This opportunity is for youth work placements in Cape Town
Book before: 27 September 2019

About this project

Following an enthusiastic response and a very successful ongoing pilot, we are pleased to announce the second intake for the CDI work-experience programme, now titled Youth LaunchPad.

This project will support a funded six-month work opportunity for unemployed matriculants and graduates in craft and design businesses. The project will support on-the job and skills development training for the work-candidates; as well as support business owners to develop the systems and capacity to manage and grow inexperienced staff. The project is supported by the City of Cape Town’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) programme.

We believe the project is of tremendous value to both parties. It capacitates business owners with HR skills and systems, enables business improvements in key areas, and importantly, it is an opportunity for talented youth to get a springboard into the sector while aiding business growth.

If you’re in a space where you know you need to grow your business but are nervous of the financial risk and don’t think you have the systems to recruit, train and manage new employees, then this is a great programme for you.

We launched the pilot project earlier this year in May with a two-day HR training workshop, following which 21 businesses were selected to participate in the pilot – creating work opportunities for a total of 36 young work seekers to date. They are gaining experience in office/business administration; production and sales/marketing.

Here’s what some of the business owners have to say about the benefits

It been a very positive experience for me. It has given me some time and breathing space to see what I need to do to grow the business further. I have already had the time to develop a new addition to our product range, with more in the pipeline. Production and stock control improved.
I am extremely grateful for having been motivated into taking on a trainee. It is the only way to expand the capacity of the business. I was too busy trying to cope with everything to see the light.
Kerry Abramowitz of TableArt has taken on one work placement in production

I won’t lie, if we hadn’t had the HR training before I probably would have been way more overwhelmed with new hires and I probably would have scared them off. Learning HR properly and diving in deep to the pros/cons of employment and how to do the right thing made a massive difference to how I view employment.
Jinae Heyns of Matsidiso has taken on three trainees in office admin,
sales and digital marketing

The HR workshop was eye-opening…Before I was doing everything myself, such as patterns, cutting and stitching. I’ve learnt how to delegate and the importance of this for the business. I understood more about the need to recruit the right person for the job. My mistake in the past has been in this area, and it was very taxing trying to train the wrong person. Having the admin support has been great; there is now someone to respond to emails immediately and flag important matters. Before I was trying to fit it all in when tired in the evening, and I would miss important emails.
Pinkie Luswazi of Luspin Designs has taken on two work placements in production and admin

More about the project

The project, including the workshop, is for creative businesses at varying stages of growth. The six-month placement is scheduled to begin on December 02, 2019.

As part of the application and selection process the CDI will conduct a light due diligence to assess the business readiness of all SMMEs that apply. Successful SMMEs will be notified and receive the go-ahead to start the recruitment process. The work trainees will sign a work contract with the SMME for the six-month placement period. The businesses will sign a contract with the CDI and agree to the rules of engagement for participation in the programme.

More about this HR Building Blocks for Capacity Development workshop

The training, tools and resources provided in this HR Building Blocks for Capacity Development workshop will serve to prepare businesses in the craft and design sector for HR Capacity Building.

It will teach the business owners how to assess their business readiness for capacity development, identify skills gaps to achieve their business objectives, and include the planning required for the uptake of added capacity. The workshop will provide the training and tools to help develop job roles and responsibilities, organisational structure and reporting, recruitment, training requirements, and so forth.

The training will include information, and easily accessible resources to build the foundation of good and sustainable HR practices and capacity design that reflects the business culture, ethics and values. The training provides the basis of the application to the project.
