The CDI has been recognised by the V&A Waterfront as one of it is 100 Beautiful Things, a new initiative that celebrates the creativity and ingenuity of the makers behind some of South Africa’s most inspiring projects, products, ideas and experiences. The initiative features 100 Beautiful Things, all of which are designed with either compassion, sustainability, future-thinking or local essence at their core, with some being recognised for just simply being beautiful.

100 Beautiful Things is an initiative that the V&A Waterfront is running in partnership with Platform Creative Agency. As the CDI turns 20-years-old this year, the V&A Waterfront has acknowledged the organisation's contribution to the growth of the craft and design sector.

"The Craft and Design Institute has carved the way forward for many of the designers and craftspeople we recognise in South Africa today, offering them business, product, market and design support to help grow their businesses while reaching new audiences both locally and internationally," says the V&A Waterfront in the listing.

Erica Elk, CDI Group CEO, thanked the V&A Waterfront for the acknowledgement.

“We are honoured to be recognised in this way for our work over the past 20 years; work in no small way made possible thanks to the support of the V&A Waterfront’s leadership and it’s people over the years. Today the V&A plays host to a great many of our members at the V&A Watershed, which has become an important tourist attraction helping small businesses grow. We have hosted many sector events there, from markets and exhibitions to creative talks; and for the past year or so of course we have been a tenant as well. We look forward to the next 20 years and to many new collaborations to grow the local craft and design sector.”

The 100 Beautiful Things initiative comes at a time when many local small creative enterprises and projects are suffering from the wide-reaching negative impact of the COVID-19 crisis.

“We launched this good-news initiative to inspire positivity, as well as to support and elevate some of the incredible enterprises and creative projects in our country, all of whom strengthen South African society and leave a better world for all,” explained David Green, CEO at the V&A Waterfront.

“At tough times like these we believe that now, more than ever, there is a real need to support local businesses and enterprises, and the people behind them, as much as we can. Creative, retail and lifestyle businesses have been particularly hard hit, but with help and support they are exactly the companies that will have the ability to help rebuild our society. We hope that by showcasing these enterprises and the creative abilities of the people behind them, we can in some way lift people’s spirits and contribute to helping the people behind the designs and ideas sustain themselves through the difficult times arising from the global pandemic,” Green continued.

Over 100 days, the 100 Beautiful Things are being showcased, one a day, on the V&A Waterfront digital platforms, as well as on a dedicated website (www.100beautifulthings.co.za).
