The CDI is part of two key COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) related initiatives in the Western Cape – one a platform that provides a single place for suppliers to promote their product ranges and for businesses to find what they need; and the other a provincial “Maskathon” which aims to get donations of over one million masks for those in underprivileged communities.

Marketplace for PPEs

The new marketplace for PPEs is a single platform that connects corporates looking to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for their businesses and their staff, with manufacturers and suppliers thereof. The CDI has been encouraging business members who produce these items to list on the platform, and has also listed as a supplier to support micro-businesses we work with to access orders.

The platform has been
created by the Western Cape Government, City of Cape Town and Wesgro, with the support of FNB and RMB.

Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities, David Maynier says, "We firmly believe that if done responsibly, the economy in the Western Cape can open up while preventing the spread of COVID-19, and so we are committed to supporting businesses through this crisis. To avoid a return to a hard lockdown, it is an imperative that every business that is operating now, or in the future, plays by the rules, and implements the necessary health and safety measures as instructed by national government to avoid further negative impacts on their respective sector. The PPE marketplace is one of the many ways that we are supporting businesses to ensure their workplace is healthy and safe for both staff and customers."

Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management within the City of Cape Town, commented: “The City provides funding support to the clothing and textile sector, which is testament to our support for this vital sector in the local economy. We have succeeded in assisting with the re-purposing of companies to pivot towards meeting the needs of the health crisis. Specifically, Special Businesses Partners of the City’s Department of Enterprise and Investment, the Cape Clothing and Textile Cluster (CCTC) and the Craft and Design Institute have, through consultation with their members, provided critical insight into the sourcing and supply of cloth masks from both large manufacturers and small to micro enterprises. The production of PPE is vital in ensuring our businesses can get back to work in safe environments and to ensure that businesses stay afloat and productive in this crisis.”

Maskathon Challenge

Millions of fabric face masks are needed as donations to indigent people throughout the Western Cape province to fight against COVID-19.

The Maskathon Challenge is an initiative aimed at donating one million masks to those in need. The Western Cape Government, Wesgro, the City of Cape Town, the Craft and Design Institute and other partners have come together to make this project possible.

The donation drive helps underprivileged communities while also boosting the economy by stimulating local manufacturing across large and small-scale producers. To date, over 84 000 masks have been pledged through add-ons from a few large corporates; in addition the CDI has received nearly R10 000 in cash donations and is currently farming these out in batches to mask makers on our database; and we have received donations of 1 000 masks that will soon be delivered to the Wesgro nominated charities.

How do the donations work?

There are two options for your donations:

  • Mask Donation. If you have fabric face masks you wish to donate to an organisation. We will connect you.
  • Monetary Donation for masks. If you wish to donate funds towards the supply of fabric face masks for those in need, the CDI will support the entire process on your behalf and arrange to donate to the charity of your choice. The CDI will provide you with the relevant 18A Certificate.
