NEXT Showcase Exhibition: South African Design on the Global Stage

The Craft and Design Institute's NEXT programme is built on a singular belief: that South African craft, design and manufacturing businesses have what it takes to compete on the world stage. Through specialised export development support, training, mentorship and market access opportunities, NEXT equips participants with the tools, knowledge and confidence to take their businesses beyond local borders.

Rooted in a valued partnership with the Dutch government's Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI), the programme has steadily built pathways for South African designers and makers to access global markets — always with quality, innovation and authentic local production at its core.

To celebrate the achievements of NEXT participants, the CDI has launched the NEXT Showcase Exhibition at its new offices. The exhibition brings together a curated selection of products from businesses supported through the programme, offering a window into the exceptional creativity, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial spirit that defines South Africa's design sector.

Each piece in the showcase reflects work that is rooted in material exploration, thoughtful production and a distinctly local point of view — qualities that resonate with international buyers and audiences alike. Housed within CDI's new space, the exhibition gives these businesses meaningful exposure to the diverse range of visitors and events that pass through the venue, creating ongoing opportunities for connection and traction.

More than a display of beautiful objects, the NEXT Showcase is a testament to what targeted business development support can achieve. Every product represents a business that has invested in its own growth — refining its offering, embracing innovation and building the export readiness needed to compete globally. Together, they tell a compelling story about the strength and potential of South Africa's creative economy.

CDI and BusinessNL bring Dutch and South African entrepreneurs together in Cape Town

The Craft and Design Institute (CDI) hosted an event bringing together entrepreneurs from CDI’s Orange Corners Designs programme with members of the Dutch business community. The event, in partnership with BusinessNL and the Consulate General of the Netherlands in Cape Town, was designed to creating meaningful connections between local creative entrepreneurs and Dutch businesses and partners, opening doors to collaboration, investment and growth opportunities that can further strengthen the OCD and OCIF programmes and the individual participants within them.

BusinessNL is the Dutch Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, operating from offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Its mission is to optimise trade between South Africa and the Netherlands, serving as a strategic platform for Dutch companies seeking to expand their business ventures in and across Southern Africa. The partnership with CDI reflects a shared commitment to connecting entrepreneurial ecosystems across both countries and unlocking tangible opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Twenty-nine entrepreneurs from the OCD and OCIF programmes attended the evening, representing businesses ranging from wastewater treatment and solar maintenance to fashion, digital services and food innovation. Guests heard directly from entrepreneurs who shared their journeys and reflected on the impact the programmes have had on their growth and confidence as business owners.

Helene Rekkers, Consul General of the Netherlands in Cape Town, highlighted the importance of the ongoing partnership between the Netherlands and CDI and expressed enthusiasm about bringing together Dutch and South African entrepreneurs, businesses and innovators through meaningful collaboration and exchange.

Erica Elk, CEO of CDI, reflected on the significance of the evening. "Events like this are at the heart of what we believe in — creating spaces where entrepreneurs can connect with the right people at the right time. Seeing our OCD and OCIF participants engage directly with the Dutch business community, and witnessing the conversations that unfolded, reminded us of just how much is possible when two entrepreneurial ecosystems come together with a shared sense of purpose."

The response from participants was overwhelmingly positive. Entrepreneurs described the evening as energising, insightful and highly motivating, with many noting that it broadened their perspectives and reinforced the value of cross-sector collaboration. Several participants highlighted new business leads, potential partnerships, funding conversations and meaningful exchanges with professionals from a wide range of industries, reflecting the tangible impact the event had beyond the room.

The evening concluded with lively networking that continued well beyond the formal programme, a fitting reflection of the energy, enthusiasm and possibility that the partnership between CDI and BusinessNL continues to generate.

Orange Corners Designs celebrates graduation of second Cape Town cohort

Seventeen creative entrepreneurs marked a significant milestone as they graduated from the year-long Orange Corners Designs (OCD) programme in Cape Town. Hosted at the CDI offices at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal on the V&A Waterfront last month, the event celebrated Cohort 2's successful completion of the programme, a culmination of a journey spent refining business visions, building networks and unlocking new opportunities for collaboration and growth within the creative economy.

Orange Corners Designs is an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is proudly managed in South Africa by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI). The programme supports young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35 who are building creative businesses with strong potential for growth and impact.

Operating in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, OCD equips entrepreneurs with the tools, mentorship and practical knowledge needed to strengthen their businesses and expand their market reach. Over the course of the year, participants engage in an intensive curriculum covering key areas such as business development, financial management, product development, market access and intellectual property.

The ceremony was made even more special by guest speaker Ronald Makomba, Head of Outbound at Yoco, whose insights on building and scaling a business resonated deeply with the room. A heartfelt message from Geerten Schurink, RVO Programme Advisor, reminded the cohort of the bigger picture they are part of, connecting their individual journeys to a wider international movement of creative entrepreneurship.

Phefumlela Bam, Cape Town Programme Coordinator reflected on the cohort's journey and the growth witnessed over the past year.

"Watching this cohort grow over the past year has been incredibly rewarding. Each entrepreneur brought their own unique vision to the programme, and to see how they have developed their businesses, built their confidence and strengthened their foundations is something we are truly proud of. We look forward to seeing the lasting impact they will make in the creative economy," she said.

For many of the graduates, the programme provided an opportunity to rethink how they approach their businesses while building valuable connections within the creative ecosystem.

Geneva Frans, founder of Geneva Frans Atelier, reflected on the experience. "The Orange Corners Designs programme pushed me to think more strategically about my business and gave me the tools and connections I needed to take it to the next level. I leave with a clearer vision, a stronger network and the confidence to keep building."

With the formal programme now complete, the graduates join the wider Orange Corners community and will continue their journey through the Orange Corners Alumni Programme, which offers ongoing mentorship, networking opportunities and access to international connections.

As they take the next steps in their entrepreneurial journeys, these seventeen innovators are helping shape a more vibrant creative economy, one that creates opportunity, inspires communities and drives meaningful change.

V&A Waterfront and CDI Launch Circular Maker Space at Cape Town Cruise Terminal

V&A Waterfront-funded initiative, operated by CDI, creates a new platform for circular making, creative enterprise and sustainable growth.

The V&A Waterfront has funded the development of a new Circular Maker Space at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal, creating a dedicated platform for South Africa’s designers, makers and creative entrepreneurs to access tools, networks and support in one of the country’s most visible and dynamic precincts. Operated by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), the space is designed to support circular making, experimentation and enterprise growth.

The initiative reflects a shared commitment between the V&A Waterfront and CDI to inclusive economic growth, sustainability and creative-sector development. For the V&A Waterfront, the Circular Maker Space builds on a longstanding investment in small business support and enterprise incubation, expressed through initiatives such as Makers Landing and its broader SMME support programme. For CDI, it creates a powerful new base from which to run and grow a national resource for makers and entrepreneurs.

With more than 24 million visits annually, the V&A Waterfront offers the Circular Maker Space and the broader creative sector exceptional visibility and market access. Locating the space at the Cruise Terminal, already home to a growing cluster of creative and food enterprises, places South Africa’s makers at the centre of one of the country’s most visited destinations, while extending CDI’s support to a membership base of more than 8,600 small businesses and reinforcing its role as a national and continental resource.

“The V&A Waterfront has long believed that investing in small business and creative enterprise is an investment in Cape Town’s future. This Circular Maker Space reflects our commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for makers and entrepreneurs, while advancing more sustainable ways of making and doing business. CDI is the right partner to activate this space and help ensure it delivers real value to the creative sector,” said Graham Wood, CEO of the V&A Waterfront.

CDI’s track record provides the foundation for this ambition. Over the past decade, and with the sustained support of long-term funders including the Jobs Fund, the organisation has leveraged more than R200 million in direct investment into local small businesses, helped enable a further R420 million in additional investment, and stimulated the creation of thousands of sustainable jobs across South Africa.

Najwah Allie-Edries, Head of the Jobs Fund, which has walked alongside CDI for 14 years, noted
that “the success of CDI demonstrates the power of partnerships. What makes this moment especially significant is that it reflects the interconnected impact of long-term public investment. Through the Jobs Fund’s partnership with the V&A Waterfront,
we invested in creating pathways for food entrepreneurs to access infrastructure, mentorship, and markets. Today, we are seeing those ripple effects extend into the broader creative economy ecosystem represented by the CDI. This is what catalytic
public finance is meant to achieve: connected ecosystems of opportunity that create lasting economic participation and sustainable livelihoods.”

The initiative has also drawn support from government. Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee
Member for Economic Growth at the City of Cape Town, attended the launch and shared the following: “I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the Craft and Design Institute over my time as the Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth in the City
of Cape Town. I have had the privilege of visiting many of their premises and engaging directly with the designers, makers, and entrepreneurs in their creative workspaces, seeing first-hand the talent, innovation, and sheer possibility that exists
within our creative sector. It has been deeply inspiring to witness the real impact that this work has on people’s livelihoods and on the growth of our local economy. The City’s Economic Growth Directorate is proud to support and fund the CDI as a
special purpose vehicle that helps unlock the immense potential of Cape Town’s creative industries, and to back the vision of building a globally competitive, inclusive, and thriving creator economy rooted in our city.”

As CDI CEO, Erica
Elk describes it, the Circular Maker Space is conceived as something far greater than a local facility. "This is not just a facility for businesses in Cape Town, it is a centre of excellence, a resource for creators all over the country and on the
continent. Our vision is that this location becomes a home for creators wanting to play, experiment, network, and expand their horizons. We are open to partners and possibilities."

As South Africa’s creator economy continues to grow,
the Circular Maker Space represents a tangible investment in the country’s creative heritage and economic future. CDI Board Chairperson Shado Twala reflected that this new chapter "builds on a two-decade legacy, offering a forward-looking platform
that embraces innovation, sustainability, and opportunity for the next generation of makers", bringing sustainability, innovation and opportunity together through a shared vision for the sector.

Hosted at the University of Johannesburg Technology Transfer Office (UJTTO) in Auckland Park, the event marked the second cohort's successful completion of the programme in the city, a culmination of a journey refining business visions, building networks and highlighting innovation, unlocking opportunities for collaboration and business growth.

Operating in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, OCD equips entrepreneurs with the tools, mentorship and practical knowledge needed to strengthen their businesses and expand their market reach. Over the course of the year, participants engage in an intensive curriculum covering key areas such as business development, financial management, product development, market access and intellectual property.

As part of the programme, the Cohort 2 entrepreneurs also took part in a range of workshops, mentorship sessions and creative exchange opportunities that connected them with industry experts, ecosystem partners and fellow entrepreneurs, many of whom joined the celebration to recognise the achievements of the cohort and the progress they made through the programme.

Guest speaker

It has been inspiring to see how each entrepreneur refined their vision and strengthened the foundations of their businesses. We are proud to celebrate their achievements and look forward to seeing the impact they will continue to make in the creative economy,” he said.

For many of the graduates, the programme provided an opportunity to rethink how they approach their businesses while building valuable connections within the creative ecosystem.

Nelisiwe Ndebele, founder of shoe design and manufacturing company

Making It! 2026: Scaling South Africa’s creative economy

Making It! 2026 marks 25 years of the Craft and Design Institute shaping South Africa’s creative economy, convening designers, founders, strategists, investors and cultural leaders in the Kramerville Design District from 24 to 25 March 2026.

Since 2001, the CDI has grown from supporting 63 makers to a national network of more than 8,300 creative enterprises across all nine provinces. The sector has evolved. The ambition has sharpened. The conversation now moves beyond participation and into scale.

Making It! is designed for those already established in their field as well as those forging their path. It creates a rare point of connection between leaders who have navigated complex markets and continue to innovate within them, and emerging voices ready to step into that arena.

Across two days, industry leaders, brand strategists, cultural thinkers, fintech experts and founders will unpack what growth really requires: the move from local recognition to national presence, from creative practice to structured enterprise, from isolated talent to connected industry. That shift does not happen by accident. It happens when experience is shared openly, when hard lessons are examined honestly, and when the right people are in the same room.

The speaker line-up reflects a sector coming into its own. Internationally recognised artists sit alongside executives shaping funding and policy landscapes, entrepreneurs building scalable ventures, and systems thinkers interrogating how design operates within broader economic frameworks. These are individuals who have built, repositioned, expanded and endured.

Together, they represent a maturing creative ecosystem: founders who have scaled, strategists who have repositioned brands, academics who interrogate markets, financial leaders who understand infrastructure, and cultural voices ensuring growth remains grounded in identity.

Speakers include:

Shado Twala | Chairperson, Craft and Design Institute (Making It!
New CDI project provides market sales skills development for women and youth

The Craft and Design Institute (CDI) is thrilled to announce a new project,
proudly supported by the National Arts Council (NAC), which will create 15 funded
part-time job opportunities while developing essential retail and market-ready
skills in South Africa’s craft and design sector.

The programme will recruit 15 sales assistants to support craft and
design SMMEs, alongside five additional roles. Recruitment began in mid-January
through the CDI’s Kuier @ The Castle Market and the V&A Watershed’s
business owners’ network, with implementation scheduled to take place during
March.

Prioritising women and youth, the 15 sales assistants will complete a
structured five-day training programme at the CDI offices in the V&A
Waterfront. Developed by the CDI, the programme covers market orientation,
point-of-sale systems, cash handling and reconciliation, inventory management,
sales techniques, and customer engagement.

Additionally, participants will take part in a hands-on set-up and display
showcase at the CDI’s new Cape Town space at Cruise Terminal. This will focus
on styling and merchandising skills, with feedback that strengthens their
understanding of consumer behaviour and effective market engagement.

“We are excited to partner with the National Arts Council on this programme
combining structured training – through it we are equipping women and youth
with the skills, confidence, and exposure needed to succeed, while also supporting
small businesses in the craft and design sector,” says Rosemary Cooke, CDI’s
Capacity Building and Training Programme Manager.

This initiative reflects the CDI’s ongoing commitment to linking skills
development with meaningful job creation and sustainable, inclusive sector
growth.

Making It! 2026: Celebrating 25 Years of Building South Africa’s Creative Economy

The Craft and Design Institute (CDI) proudly marks 25 years of championing South Africa’s creative economy with Making It!
2026, a two-day celebration of design, craft, and entrepreneurship in the heart of the Kramerville Design District from 24-25 March 2026.

Since its establishment, the CDI has transformed the craft and design sector from a modest network of 63 makers in 2001 to a vibrant community of over 8,300 creatives across all nine provinces. Through strategic support, skills development, and
market access, the CDI has helped countless makers turn their creativity into sustainable businesses, creating jobs and generating hundreds of millions in revenue.

“The most
important lesson we learnt in the early days – and which continues to be reinforced today – is that building sustainable businesses takes time; it’s a journey, not a destination,” says Erica Elk, founding CEO of the CDI. “With curiosity, resilience,
and a willingness to learn, the magic happens.”

Making It! 2026 brings together emerging and established designers, innovators, educators, investors, and policymakers for
focused conversations, practical exchanges, live demonstrations, and immersive experiences. Over two days, participants will explore how heritage and craftsmanship intersect with innovation, discover new ways of making, and experience the transformative
    power of collaboration.

Highlights include:

For 25 years, the CDI has been creating these spaces through our Creative Exchanges – and Making It! 2026 is a milestone moment to bring this celebration to Johannesburg.”

The event underscores the importance of creativity in addressing South Africa’s economic challenges, particularly for women and young people, while highlighting the global demand for authentic, ethically produced design. Making It! celebrates not just individual breakthroughs, but the consistent passion, effort, and vision that drive South Africa’s creative sector.

The conference will be held within Level Three – boasting spectacular views across Sandton – with an evening reception at the iconic Katy’s Palace Bar.

On 11 December, we opened the doors to our new Cape Town home at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal and welcomed creatives, designers, innovators and partners for a powerful Creative Exchange (CX) under the theme "Made Differently: Design That Matters".

We unpacked how circular design is no longer a buzzword – it's a driver of competitive advantage, and a catalyst for a more resilient creative economy in South Africa.

Supported by the Western Cape Government Department of Economic Development and Tourism, this gathering sparked bold conversations, meaningful connections and practical insights into how circular design can shape the future.

From an energising cross-disciplinary panel to networking over lunch, the day brought together diverse voices united by a shared belief that circular design can be a competitive advantage.

The afternoon breakaway workshops took key ideas even further:

Reimagining products through local waste streams and regenerative design (facilitated by Tashma Kritzinger); and Rethinking branding, transparency and storytelling to unlock conscious consumer demand (facilitated by Damien Hewitt)

Participants left with fresh thinking, actionable ideas and renewed confidence that creativity, responsibility and commercial success can coexist.

Our thanks to our inspiring cross-disciplinary panel:

Alison Evans
A pioneer in the Western Cape’s waste sector, Alison has spent over two decades driving waste minimisation

as business development partner! With decades of experience helping South African creative enterprises grow locally and globally, CDI brings invaluable expertise to their mission of empowering the next generation of creative entrepreneurs.

Sanlam Private Wealth recently unveiled the Ventures Foundation, a bold new initiative dedicated to identifying and nurturing South Africa’s next wave of exceptional creative entrepreneurs.

Through a combination
of rigorous mentorship, bespoke business training and global exposure, the Ventures Foundation aims to empower designers to refine their craft, build sustainable businesses and become globally recognised ambassadors of contemporary African design.

“As part of our integrated wealth offering, Sanlam Private Wealth sets up investment structures, including public benefit organisations, for high and ultra-high net worth clients,” says Sanlam Private Wealth CEO Theesan Moodley.
‘We’ve now used our expertise to create a platform that will drive meaningful impact and endure for generations to come.

“We believe that fostering creative entrepreneurship supports sustainable economic development by tapping
into South Africa’s extraordinary talent and cultural heritage. At the same time, this initiative enables our clients – many of whom are deeply committed to giving back – to partner with an organisation that offers them the opportunity to do so
        in a lasting, authentic way.”

How will it work?

South African creative entrepreneurs are invited to design a luxury textile piece, prototyped as a rug, that reimagines what luxury represents in Africa
today. It should embody the language of quiet luxury: refined craftsmanship, superior materials, and a sense of lasting value.

A total of 12 standout designers will be shortlisted to join a series of immersive workshops
and masterclasses. From there, five finalists will be selected for a tailored mentorship experience led by leaders in design, entrepreneurship and business strategy – including experts from Sanlam Private Wealth. The journey will culminate in
one exceptional designer travelling to Maison&Objet Paris, one of the world’s foremost showcases of design and innovation.

Why creative entrepreneurship?

Sanlam Private Wealth was founded on entrepreneurial
ambition – a few bold minds who recognised opportunity where others saw risk. Today, with over R265 billion in assets under management and administration, that spirit continues to shape our portfolios, strategies and now, our broader impact.

Design, too, is an act of disciplined risk-taking. It demands conviction, craftsmanship and the vision to see value where others don’t – a philosophy that has long guided Sanlam Private Wealth’s investment approach.

With
the Ventures Foundation, this mindset is being extended to the world of creative entrepreneurship – contributing to an emerging sector with the potential to drive inclusive growth, foster innovation and elevate African voices on a global stage.

Who can participate?

Sanlam
Private Wealth operates in the luxury segment. Clients seek bespoke, highly personal wealth solutions crafted around their legacies – not off-the-shelf retail products.

In the same vein, the Ventures Foundation
programme is a selective, curated search for exceptional, hand-picked entrepreneurial talent with the courage to challenge convention and contribute meaningfully to Africa’s luxury design story.

Entrants must have an
established business, a point of view and some track record, but still be on the path toward global recognition.

Mentors and partners

The expert panel brings together leaders across design, business
and creative entrepreneurship, including Tracy Lee Lynch (Clout/SA), Laurie Wiid van Heerden (Wiid Design), Mpho Vackier (TheUrbanative), Zizipho Poswa (Imiso), Charl Edwards (Lookbook Studios) and business strategist Claude Morris, alongside
Sanlam Private Wealth’s investment expertise represented by Lentsoane Lekalakala.

The Craft & Design Institute (CDI) joins as the programme’s business development partner, drawing on decades of experience preparing South
African creative enterprises for local and global markets.

An investable future

“At Sanlam Private Wealth, we’ve always believed that true wealth is more than capital – it is craft, legacy and purpose,”
        says Moodley.

“The Ventures Foundation is an extension of that belief – a platform where personalised wealth meets design-led entrepreneurship. It creates the conditions for a group of emerging entrepreneurs to build
enduring brands that will last for generations to come.”

Full programme details are available here: https://sanlamprivatewealth.sanlam.com/why-choose-us/ventures-foundation/.

Local creatives thrive through exposure and trading at CDI’s Kuier@TheCastle Market in December

When opportunity, preparation and platform come together, real impact follows. This was powerfully evident at the CDI’s Kuier@TheCastle Festive Season Market, where over 20 local creatives – supported by the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport – took their opportunity on Saturday, 13 December, trading alongside more than 100 other South African entrepreneurs at one of Cape Town’s most vibrant markets.

As reported earlier in December, creatives from towns on the West Coast and areas around the Cape Town city centre have been part of our latest market-readiness programme, designed to build the confidence, skills and commercial resilience of creative entrepreneurs.

For many, Kuier@TheCastle was not just a trading opportunity – it was a breakthrough moment, exposing their work to new audiences, real-time consumer feedback and the realities of operating within a high-profile, experiential market environment.

This initiative builds on CDI’s long-term commitment to expanding access to its services and access to new markets.

In 2025, this programme for the participants has been made possible through the continued support of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), enabling CDI to deepen its focus on market and trade readiness for creative entrepreneurs operating in diverse contexts.

This DCAS-funded project is an extension of the work that begun in the 2020/21 financial year with regional producers in the Western Cape. This group of local creative entrepreneurs have upskilled themselves over the past three months by attending
workshops, online training and now in December, through trading at the market.

The group represented a powerful cross-section of the province’s creative economy. Eight producers travelled from West Coast towns including Saldanha, Langebaan, Hopefield and Vredenburg, while 16 others were based in and around Cape Town, including Philippi Village, Khayelitsha, Mbekweni in Paarl and Kraaifontein.

Importantly, the programme also supported producers living with disabilities, including artisans from the Cape Town Society for the Blind in Salt River – reinforcing CDI’s commitment to inclusive economic participation.

Kuier@TheCastle itself has evolved into far more than a market. Set within the historic Castle of Good Hope, it is a living, breathing creative experience where commerce meets culture. Visitors enjoyed fashion shows, live local music,
workshops, interactive creative sessions for families, and a diverse offering of homeware, fashion, art, food and accessories – all very proudly local.

For the creatives, the impact was tangible. Ursula Venter, founder of Shebear – which makes local food products such as orange peel dipped in dark chocolate, candied orange peel, preserved orange rolletjies and fruit chutney – in Hopefield, shared that participating in the project sparked “new ideas for products and new ideas for marketing my company’s story and offering.”

Trading at Kuier@TheCastle introduced her to new consumers whose feedback will directly shape her next phase of growth.

Charlene van Niekerk, Head of Production and Sales at the Cape Town Society for the Blind, highlighted how the programme enabled product innovation, noting that new items – from cell phone bags to furniture designs and festive stockings – were tested directly in a premier market environment. “Through being part of this CDI project we have extended our product range and successfully showcased new products in the market,” she says.

CDI Product Development Facilitator and the Project Manager, Caragh Barwise, observed how participants maximised the opportunity, including by hosting public workshops that extended engagement beyond sales.

For first-time trader Thembakazi Sondwana of Idwala Tailoring in Philippi East – who makes traditionally styled Shweshwe clothing and bags – the experience was transformative.

“There are so many people here, it’s a really big market! I have learned so much about talking to people in a way that helps to sell my products and also how to display my products in a way that will be attractive to the consumer,” she reflected.

These stories underscore CDI’s impact: not just creating access to markets, but building capability, confidence and accelerating long-term sustainability for creative businesses.

Image below: Participants at the December Kuier@TheCastle market

CDI’s Kuier@TheCastle Market builds market-readiness in local producers

The CDI’s Kuier@TheCastle market is extending its support for local creative entrepreneurs by hosting producers from towns on the West Coast and areas around the Cape Town city centre in a market-readiness programme that assists them to build their confidence and skills in trading successfully at a premier local hand-crafted products market.

The project is an extension of the work that begun in the 2020/21 financial year with regional producers in the Western Cape, increasing access to the CDI services for creative entrepreneurs in these areas. This year’s programme of increasing market and trade readiness skills is being made possible thanks to the continued support of the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS).

This year there are eight participants from the West Coast towns of Hopefield, Langebaan, Vredenburg and Saldanha.

In addition, this programme is benefitting 10 other participants who are craft producers based in areas around the city: Phillippi Village, Khayelitsha, Mbekweni in Paarl, and Kraaifontein, as well as producers who are people living with a disability and working with the Cape Town Society for the Blind based in Salt River. Products from the producers participating in this programme include ceramics, leather wear, fashion, jewellery, home décor, crafted food items and woven functional items from the Cape Town Society for the Blind.

“This programme of market readiness development supports craft producers and designers with refining their marketing, product and presentation skills at a market. In addition, we will also guide the producers (through workshops) with product development ideas that focus on expanding each entrepreneur’s own creativity. We are delighted to host these participants at CDI’s Kuier@TheCastle market where we can support them onsite to become aware of what the consumer is looking for and what works well at a market. Our additional in-person capacity building through the workshops is augmented by CDI’s online learning platform called LEARN – which the participants can access in their own time 24/7,” says Fran Stewart, Manager of the CDI’s Market Access Programme.

The CDI hosted the group of participants for onsite training at the Kuier@TheCastle market on the 29th November. Reflecting on this experience, Charlene van Niekerk, Head of Production and Sales at the Cape Town Society for the Blind, said: “The time spent at the market helped me with the planning and choosing products that are suitable for this market. We realised that we should concentrate more on an economical price range in our product offering and that smaller products would be ideal judging by the size of the stalls. Friendliness and customer care plays a major role as always in attracting the customer!”.

Mother and daughter team from Hopefield, Joslin Julies and Ariana Veotte, said: Kuier@TheCastle was an amazing experience! This was our first time participating in one of the CDI’s training initiatives, and this helped us with so many new ideas and ways of doing certain things in our business. We learnt so much about making a good impression when it comes to customers and having a clear image of what you are selling.”

This group of project beneficiaries will put their market readiness skills into action on Saturday 13th December when the trade at Kuier@TheCastle. The market is located at the Castle of Good Hope and open from 10h00 until 16h00.

CDI Creative Exchange explores youth Innovation in the growing hemp economy

As global industries move towards more sustainable materials and practices, hemp is fast emerging as a catalyst for innovation and inclusive economic growth. In October, our latest CDI Creative Exchange event explored the potential under the theme Exploring the Hemp Ecosystem and Youth Entrepreneurship Opportunities.

The event was hosted in the Atrium of the Transwerke Building at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg – where our CDI Johannesburg office is based – as part of our
Orange Corners Designs programme, which has just completed recruitment for its 2026 intake of innovative local entrepreneurs.

The Creative Exchange, an event hosted regularly by the CDI for over 20 years, brought together a dynamic mix of young innovators and industry experts to unpack the opportunities within South Africa’s evolving hemp industry – from cultivation and processing to product design, manufacturing, and policy.

With the sector on the brink of expansion following new regulatory developments, the discussion highlighted just how relevant hemp has become as a driver of green entrepreneurship and job creation, particularly for youth.

Three guest speakers shared valuable insights spanning the hemp value chain: Bradley Jackson and Modise Nalane of REM, and Linda Siboto, co-founder of Cheeba Academy, Africa’s leading cannabis and hemp education institution.

Jackson opened the session with a practical look at the agricultural heart of the industry. He took participants through the production cycle – from genetics and seed selection to cultivation, harvesting, and processing – emphasising how innovation at farm level underpins both sustainability and profitability across the value chain.

Nalane then offered a strategic view of the broader hemp market, outlining global and regional trends, investor interest, and the rise of vertically integrated business models. He showcased Green Route Hemp Industries in Walkerville, Africa’s first vertically integrated hemp processing centre, as an example of how South African entrepreneurs can create value through local production and innovation.

Concluding the expert contributions, Siboto turned the focus to the policy, education, and advocacy frameworks shaping the hemp and cannabis sectors. Representing Cheeba Academy, he highlighted the importance of public education and community engagement in demystifying the plant, opening career pathways, and ensuring inclusive growth. His message of awareness and skills development strongly resonated with participants eager to explore new business opportunities in the space.

The interactive discussion that followed reflected the energy and creativity of the group. Participants explored ways to apply their talents across the hemp value chain – from product development and design to digital storytelling and even gaming as tools for education and advocacy.

While the group acknowledged that legislative hurdles remain, particularly around medical and edible applications, the session ended with a strong sense of optimism. Participants agreed that hemp holds significant potential as a platform for youth-driven innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship.

Mohau Memeza, Project Coordinator in our CDI Johannesburg office, says that, “Once again, the CDI’s Creative Exchange has demonstrated its value as a platform for connection, collaboration, and creative thinking.”

“Supported by the Orange Corners Designs programme, these sessions give emerging entrepreneurs access to expert knowledge, networks, and inspiration to transform their ideas into sustainable ventures. By linking young innovators with industry leaders, the Creative Exchange continues to strengthen South Africa’s creative ecosystem and empower the next generation of changemakers.”

Contact our Johannesburg office if you would like to find out more:

Physical Address:

16 visionary entrepreneurs on the UNDP timbuktoo Creatives Lab take next steps

It’s been a busy few months for the participants on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) timbuktoo Creatives Lab – a groundbreaking accelerator programme, proudly managed by the CDI, and designed to ignite innovation, promote sustainability, and unlock business growth across Africa’s Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs).

Following the onboarding session in July, the CDI ran an intensive weeklong Design Thinking workshop in partnership with the Hasso Plattner School of Design Thinking (d-school) at UCT, alongside Business Model Canvas sessions. These gave participants the tools to refine their creative problem-solving, sharpen their business strategies, and position their enterprises for growth.

The cohort also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in FAME Week Africa 2025, where they made valuable industry connections, and tapped into new opportunities for collaboration and investment.

According to Nkosiphambili Molapisi of global music distribution platform, Sync Discovery, the programme has delivered significant results for his business. “This has been a milestone moment for Sync Discovery. The platform provided immediate, practical skills through the Design Thinking workshop but the launch showcase and networking opportunities at Fame Week were transformative. We secured early access sign-ups, conducted high-profile interviews and most significantly secured follow-up meetings with major industry players. The programme has accelerated our business momentum and laid a clear path to measurable industry impact and revenue,” said Molapisi.

For Althea De Wet of Kind Arts, the experience has marked a turning point in both her personal and professional journey. “The Design Thinking workshop gave us the opportunity to pause and re-evaluate our business after five years, helping us to think more strategically about sustainability and client retention. Connecting with other creatives and being a part of the Creative Hub launch and exhibition – including meeting the Mayor of Atlanta – was inspiring and opened exciting possibilities for collaboration that we are in the process of exploring,” she said.

Showcasing Africa’s creative future at the timbuktoo Creatives Hub

Momentum continued in early September at the timbuktoo Creatives Hub Showcase, at the Homecoming Centre in District Six by UNDP South Africa with partners including the CDI, Western Cape Government, UVU Africa, and Snake Nation. The event celebrated the vibrant creativity emerging from the continent and placed Africa’s creative economy firmly on the global stage.

The showcase featured exhibitions by all of the timbuktoo participants, live performances, and presentations, highlighting the transformative potential of CCIs as a driver of jobs, exports, and innovation. The evening also marked a milestone announcement: Atlanta will become timbuktoo’s first corridor node in the United States.

“Africa’s creative economy is more than cultural expression – it is a serious driver of jobs, exports, and economic growth,” said Gloria Kiondo, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP South Africa. “Through the timbuktoo Creatives Hub, we are showing that Africa’s talent is not only ready, but also globally competitive.”

Premier of the Western Cape Alan Winde highlighted the uniqueness of Africa’s creative voice: “Africa is blessed with some of the most amazing places in the world. But the real magic is layered on top: the people, the sounds, the flavours, the culture. That is our story… This launchpad for modern businesses into the experiential economy is so important.”

Building an ecosystem for growth

CDI Project Manager, Marco Morgan, noted the importance of bespoke support being offered by the CDI within the timbuktoo Creatives Lab as well as the enormous value of the showcasing and networking opportunities provided so far, both peer-to-peer
amongst the cohort as well as with key stakeholders and potential investors:

“Creative entrepreneurs who understand and actively engage with the systems around them, from networks to resources, are better positioned to thrive in today’s fast-paced landscape. The timbuktoo Creatives Lab Programme harnesses these networks to democratise access to the knowledge and tools often locked within complex innovation ecosystems,” said Morgan.

Looking ahead

The journey of the participants with the CDI will culminate in a Graduation Showcase in late 2025, where each will present their refined business to stakeholders, potential investors, and partners – opening new doors to future opportunities.

The timbuktoo projects in South Africa are an initiative of UNDP with local partners the Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT), the Craft and Design Institute, UVU Africa, and youth-focused media network Snake Nation.

Small businesses, big wins: CDI-Jobs Fund SCALE programme boosts job creation

The Craft and Design Institute’s (CDI) first-ever SCALE (Supporting Creatives + Accelerating Local Enterprises) programme has delivered impressive results, enabling 174 informal craft and design enterprises to expand, and creating at least 55 new jobs in three years.

In partnership with the National Treasury’s Jobs Fund, SCALE breaks new ground by backing self-employed entrepreneurs in the informal sector – many of them running small, unregistered businesses. This marks a significant shift from previous CDI-Jobs Fund initiatives, which focused on larger, more established enterprises. The project is also supported by contributions from existing funding partners of the CDI such as the City of Cape Town.

The CDI has collaborated with the Jobs Fund and other partners for more than a decade. Its Innovation Project (2018-2023) alone created 669 new permanent jobs, fast-tracked 23 innovations, and leveraged R384 million in investment.

The SCALE programme has three cohorts. The first cohort of 96 entrepreneurs began the programme in April 2023. The second cohort started in July 2023 with 61 participants, and the third cohort commenced in February 2024 with 59 entrepreneurs. To date, 216 entrepreneurs have signed up for the SCALE programme, and 174 of them have graduated.

Standout results

CDI Group CEO Erica Elk says SCALE results have surpassed expectations:

Revenue across participants: Soared by 108.86%, compared with a modest 5% target.

Turnover: More than doubled, from R16.8 million to R35.2 million.

Earnings: Six entrepreneurs now earn more than R1 million a year.

Payments to participants: 95% now pay themselves a salary or benefits, averaging R11 346 per month.

Job creation: At least 55 new informal jobs and four permanent jobs have been created.

Reflecting on SCALE’s success, Elk says: “The key point with SCALE was whether our tested methodology for established businesses – catalytic funding, mentoring and support – could be applied to smaller, informal enterprises to create jobs and help grow the economy.

“The answer has been a resounding yes. Not only has the programme stimulated growth in revenue and earnings for business owners, it has also shown us how agile and flexible these informal businesses are in creating new work and job opportunities – down and upstream of their main business activity,”

SCALE methodology

Grant disbursements of R23 000 each gave micro businesses the fuel to grow, for investing in equipment, materials and technical services. In total, R6.4 million in growth grants was channeled in 4 052 transactions.

In tandem with the grant funding, SCALE offered personalised business assessments to help each successful applicant create a business roadmap. This was followed by six months of online training, webinars, and practical support.

Young entrepreneurs in Johannesburg and Cape Town have a chance to secure vital support and funding to grow their businesses, as applications opened on Friday 5 September for an incubation programme that boosts innovative enterprises and job creation.

The Orange Corners Designs Incubation programme is an initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands and is proudly managed by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI). This 12-month intensive programme will provide 20 selected entrepreneurs in each city with impactful workshops, masterclasses, and one-on-one mentoring to help refine their products/services, strengthen business systems, and address critical market needs.

In addition, participants may apply for a financial grant to support their growth plans from the Orange Corners Innovation Fund (OCIF), which the CDI also manages.

Successful applicants can unlock total funding of R53 000 over six to nine months, which includes a R32 000 prototyping grant if certain milestones are met.

The programme, which is also supported by matched funding from the City of Cape Town, the V&A Waterfront, Constitution Hill and the Department of Small Business Development, is tailored to assist businesses with high potential for impact and scalability, especially those led by youth and women. It focuses on innovative businesses that contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in areas such as the circular/green economy, digital, creative, and agricultural sectors, among others.

Orange Corners is a global initiative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands that supports young entrepreneurs across Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Since its launch in 2024, the South African programme run by the CDI has supported 67 businesses to date in Cape Town and
                        Johannesburg.

Khanya Mpuang, Manager of the Orange Corners Designs programme at CDI, says: “We are looking for bold young entrepreneurs (18 - 35) who are ready to grow thriving businesses.

“This
programme is not just about funding – it’s about equipping innovators with the skills, confidence and networks to grow sustainable enterprises that create jobs and contribute to the SDGs. We encourage anyone with the drive to make
                        a difference to apply.”

Success stories

Fourteen Johannesburg entrepreneurs graduated from the first, year-long incubation programme in June this year, while 16 Cape Town entrepreneurs graduated in July.

Johannesburg jewellery designer Phindile Kotane, founder of PeachyPlum accessories, says: “Joining the programme has been a truly rewarding experience. Each part of the journey pushed me beyond what I was used to, and the mentorship and workshops played a big role in strengthening my business.”

Kotane has been selected for the Orange Corners Alumni Accelerator Programme, facilitated by the Netherlands-based Forward Incubator (Forward·Inc), in collaboration with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, to steer businesses into their next growth phase.

Sifiso Mthethwa of Maphike Inc Attorneys reports a steady increase in revenue. “We have expanded our market contacts and are now in talks with people from Geneva, Davos, Zurich and Amsterdam. We have also hired two new
                                people this year.”

Cape Town graduates gave extremely positive feedback too.
