The Craft and Design Institute is currently recruiting the services of a dynamic and experienced project manager, who is ready to lead, innovate and drive success by heading up an exciting design project for the organisation.

This position will report to the CDI Connect Manager and will be required to lead and manage the design, manufacture and installation of large scale installations that form part of the Joy from Africa project.

Responsibilities include managing lead designers, co-ordination and support to suppliers/makers and client relationships. The Project Manager will also be required to manage M&E & reporting and the project budget and expenditure. Demand creation and the securing of new clients is an additional key performance area.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will have: A tertiary qualification in Industrial Design or a related field, with at least 5 years proven working experience in this field | Demonstrated project management and financial management experience | Supplier and client management experience | Strong analytical and problem-solving skills | Excellent communication and collaboration skills | Ability to work under pressure and be deadline driven | Experience of development issues and the understanding of the creative and design thinking ecosystem will be advantageous.

Project Coordinator

(1-Year Fixed-Term Contract Position)

The CDI requires the services of a skilled and innovative Project Coordinator to support the implementation of a Jobs Fund project, working with informal SMME’s in the Craft & Design sector.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Perform overall Administrative requirements for the Jobs Fund project to support the Project Manager
• Design and implement a project plan to maintain administrative requirements throughout the project (i.e. from recruitment to reporting phase)
• Set up and maintain an effective and efficient electronic filing system, as required by the project
• Build and maintain relationships with participant SMME’s as part of the project
• Assist the Project Manager with all logistical preparations for workshops and/or other events required by the project

Admin Assistant

The CDI requires the services of a skilled and innovative Administrative Assistant with strong project management and IT skills and a keen interest in implementing a systems driven approach to administrative duties. You will be working in a Programme Delivery Support Unit (DSU) that is managing a portfolio of 6 job creation projects.

You will be reporting to the DSU Manager and your responsibilities will include:

• Administrative assistance to the DSU Manager and Project Managers across the portfolio of projects
• The design and implementation of an administrative support project plan for the projects you are supporting

Apply for a short-term support position in the CDI: work opportunity for two months between 16th January - 17^th March 2023.

The National Arts Council has awarded the CDI an allocation of funding from the Presidential Economic Stimulus Programme (PESP) to stimulate work opportunities in the Craft + Design Sector. 

Through this funding, the CDI has created a number of short-term work opportunities for people who can offer administration and communications support to CDI projects for a 2-month job / work opportunity between 16^th January - 17^th March 2023.  

The value of the job/work opportunity is R12 000 in total for the employment period.

The CDI is looking for people who can support our projects in two key skills’ areas:

• Administration – skills in data capturing & in-depth analysis, database management, client liaison, gathering and collating project information, e-filing;

The CDI Growth Fund is a five-year project (01 April 2017 – 31 March 2022) which through the provision of catalytic grant funding and mentorship to SMMEs aims to create 600 new permanent jobs. 

The project has recruited 22 SMMEs thus far and has created 197 new permanent jobs over a two-year period. The project was on track to ramp up job delivery during the remaining two years,; however this has been severely impacted by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic which has put not just the new jobs but also existing jobs, and the businesses themselves, into survival mode.

To mitigate this impact, the CDI has developed a hybrid grant and soft loan facility to support the recovery and growth of the SMMEs in the Growth Fund to save and retain as many newly created and existing jobs as possible.       

To this end, the CDI is seeking to appoint one or more service providers to provide technical assistance to each SMME and advisory input to the Growth Fund Investment Committee (GFIC).

Technical assistance to SMMEs includes support with the development of a one-year recovery and growth action plan and a six-month income statement & cash flow projection as well as monthly reviews for a period of six months. Advisory input to the GFIC is to provide insight into these plans and assist decision making.

Cape Town, as a City of Design, works closely with cities in the network to share ideas, challenges and successes related to the use of design in building sustainable and resilient cities.

The Shenzhen Design Award for Young Talents (SDAY) is an international professional competition for young designers under the age of 35 (or, in the case of Architectural Design, under 40) who are from the 180 UNESCO Creative Cities worldwide.

The SDAY is administered by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Office, organised by the Shenzhen City of Design Promotion Association (SDPA), and co-organised by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The official website for this award is: http://sday.design/

The City of Shenzhen (also a City of Design) has issued this Call for Entries to young designers wishing to be considered for a Shenzhen Design Award.

The CDI requires the services of a suitably qualified HR expert and facilitator practicing in the SMME sector to deliver the training workshop to CDI businesses.

The workshop is planned for two days, Monday and Tuesday May 6 – 7, 2019.

The CDI is piloting a work-placement project with its SMME members. This pilot project will support a 6-month work opportunity for unemployed matriculants and graduates, and provide work readiness, on-the job and skills development training. The project is supported by the City of Cape Town’s EPWP programme.

The CDI is launching the programme with the HR Building Blocks for Capacity Development workshop.

The training, tools and resources provided for in the workshop will serve to prepare SMMEs in the craft and design industry for HR Capacity Development; and will open the opportunity for participating SMMEs to apply to be a part of the programme.

The HR Building Blocks for Capacity Development workshop will teach SMMEs how to assess their business readiness for capacity development, identify skills gaps to achieve their business objectives and planning for the uptake of added capacity. The workshop will provide the training and tools to help SMMEs develop job roles and responsibilities, organisational structure and reporting, recruitment, training requirements, and so forth.

This cooperative festival titled “Resilient Cities”, aims to showcase, celebrate and examine the power of design as a solution driven process for innovation and problem solving to address current socioeconomic and environmental challenges associated with water, food security, health sciences and mobility in South Africa and Africa.

The #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL is the second collaborative public design festival and is a call to action to: the public, designers, thinkers and do-ers working at the forefront of some of the biggest challenges of our time. It will bring people together to celebrate what has been achieved and work towards doing more, cementing our accolade as the first city in Africa to be named a UNESCO City of Design.
