The home industry sector is an important contributor to the GDP and provides income to many South Africans. The home industry sector is also a springboard to growth into the more formal sector as home industries products often move into the "craft" market category, where they often successfully enter the retail sector.

At Myhomegigs, the focus is on entrepreneurship, giving home industry producers a platform for showcasing their wares, while assisting them in marketing and visibility. They prefer to favour a broader interpretation of home industries to not only include food, but all products made from home. As more people start producing from home, and online trading is on the increase, they believe that the platform will be a welcome space for home industry producers to showcase their wares, keep in touch with industry news and events, and their linked Facebook presence will be a valuable networking opportunity to help drive sales.

The main advantage of listing products with them is that all products will automatically appear on a Facebook shop page, as well as in Pinterest and Instagram.

Request for information from Small Businesses and Cooperatives: Fabric/ Cloth Face Masks

  • Following President Cyril Ramaphosa’s declaration of Covid-19 pandemic as a National State of Disaster; the Department of Small Business Development (DSBD) has identified SMMEs and Cooperatives as essential contributing partners in assisting the Country to combat this national and global pandemic.
  • Fabric / Cloth face mask for the general public of South Africa is only part of a broader solution to curb the spread of COVID-19 and it must always be used in combination with other hygienic methods of prevention. The Department of Health has recommend for the use of fabric/ cloth face masks with the main benefit reducing the amount of Coronavirus or Influenza virus being coughed up by those with the infection thereby reducing its spread through droplets. Since some persons with the Coronavirus may not have symptoms or may not know they have it, everyone should wear a face-mask
  • It is however noted that such masks are not a replacement for other recommended precautionary measures. They should not provide a false sense of protection that lead to a lapse in the application of proper preventative measures like personal hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene and physical (social) distancing.
  • Government is prioritised securing these products all the stakeholders nationally to urgently deal with the pandemic. DSBD is implementing swift interventions to support small businesses that manufacture these products such as hygiene, medical and food items and related support services businesses.
  • This call out is meant to target ONLY South African Owned Small Businesses and Cooperatives (as Defined in terms of the National Small Enterprise Act 1997) that are manufacturing these products and/or are providing the services as outlined in the document.

UN issues global brief for creatives

In an unprecedented move, the United Nations has issued a global call to creatives to help combat fear and misinformation during the coronavirus pandemic.

Head of the World Health Organisation, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said the world’s greatest enemy right now was not the virus, but fear, rumours and stigma.

In an open brief, the UN said it was critical to translate public health messages “into different languages, different cultures, communities and platforms, reaching everyone, everywhere”.

“We are in an unprecedented situation and the normal rules no longer apply. We cannot resort to the usual tools in such unusual times. The creativity of the response must match the unique nature of the crisis – and the magnitude of the response must match its scale,” said UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

We especially want to encourage local residents to participate in the upcoming market and use the opportunity to showcase their products and interact with visitors. Our first market was hosted in December last year; the response was very encouraging and we believe that this market will only grow as the community realises the opportunity and potential it offers. Our staff at the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve are passionate and committed to this craft market as we believe that the local communities have much to offer in terms of locally produced and homemade goods,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Marian Nieuwoudt.

All interested vendors are welcome to apply to be a part of this exciting new local market:

  • applications must be submitted by Thursday, 20 February 2020
  • all applications must include photos and a complete product description; those without will not be considered
  • applicants who have not received a response from the City by 24 February 2020 must note that their application for this market day was unsuccessful
  • preference will be given to crafters living or working in the Atlantis; Mamre and Pella area, and who produce locally hand and art-crafted products that show creativity and originality
  • send applications and trading enquiries to and

Visitors will receive free entry to the craft market and the event will take place from 08:00 to 16:00 on both days.

Handmade clothing; knitting; toys; décor; arts and craft; jewellery; deli products; preserves; fruit and vegetables are welcome. Crafters are reminded that all fresh and baked products they plan to sell on the day must have a label stating an expiry date, the ingredients, and information about allergies. The City will only allow pre-approved products to be sold at the market and no articles that offend by word or form will be permitted.

‘We hope that an opportunity like this will encourage unemployed residents in the surrounding communities to channel some creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, and to use this platform to gain access to potential customers they might not have been able to reach otherwise,’ said Alderman Nieuwoudt.

The City-managed Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve offers participants a beautiful venue in a scenic setting for those attending the market. This location also provides vendors with an opportunity to market their goods to visitors who come to spend the day at the Atlantis Dunes.

Innibos National Craft Awards 2020: Entries are open

Entries are now open for the fourth Innibos National Craft Awards.

Launched in 2017, the competition last year attracted over 1 200 entries, up by over 400 entries from the inaugural competition.

The awards are organised by John-Anthony Boerma and Jan Bhuda of ArtAid Africa and are hosted under the auspices of the National Innibos Arts Festival.

From the get-go, the organisers were intent on creating a competition that was as inclusive as possible and four years later, this remains unchanged. Entry is thus free of charge and the entry process is simple – requiring only that a photo of the craft item be submitted, along with the entrant’s details.

“The competition is focused on showcasing the excellence of skill among South Africa’s crafters, from established artists with their own studios to those emerging craftsmen whose mastery is forged from nothing more than their own determination,” says John Anthony.

The overall winner walks away with R50 000, the first runner-up with R20 000 and the second runner-up with R15 000. Just as valuable as the prize money, however, are the connections forged with like-minded individuals and the exposure of their talent on a national stage.

Both John Anthony and Jan have years of industry experience – as artist, trainer and curator – and intimately know just how exceptional the level of craft skill is in South Africa.

Nonetheless, they have been amazed by the quality of entries, diversity of mediums and technical expertise shown by the entrants over the past years.

They invite all artists in the craft sector to submit entries in the following disciplines: grass-weaving, ceramics, beadwork, wirework, wood, jewellery, paper, fabric painting and printing, quilting, leatherwork, pewter, glasswork, embroidery and mixed media.

Forty entries will be shortlisted and put forward for final judging. The adjudication panel will be announced next year, but as always, the organisers are committed to ensuring that the judges are experts in their field who will uphold the integrity of the competition.

The winners will be announced at the National Innibos Craft Awards Exhibition and Prize-giving on Sunday, June 21, 2020, at which all 40 shortlisted entries will be displayed.

The exhibition will remain open to members of the public for the duration of the annual Innibos National Arts Festival, which attracts over 100 000 visitors each year.

“Innibos aims to create a platform for the development and enjoyment of all genres of art, so the National Craft Awards is a natural evolution of Innibos, which is synonymous with celebrating South African talent,” says Sandra Jacobs, one of the founders of the Innibos National Arts Festival.

Entering is easy!

Crafters have until midnight on May 1, 2020, to enter. They need simply take a photo of their entry – next to a matchbox for size of scale, and either email it to or send it to 071 621 3597 via MMS or WhatsApp. There is no entry fee.

Ts&Cs apply and can be found on the competition’s Facebook page –
Remember to include your name, the town in which you live and your contact details.

Entrants who have not heard from the organisers within 30 days of the closing date must take it as given that they did not make the shortlist for final judging.

The finalists must be available to attend the exhibition opening and prizegiving on June 21, 2020.

For more information, please WhatsApp Jan Bhuda on 071 621 3597 or email John Anthony Boerma at

Designers, architects, light and sound artists – as well as students and institutions - are invited to submit expressions of interest for projects that are engaging to all age groups. Applicants are encouraged to keep the youth in mind; this does not mean that serious issues cannot be presented, but merely that content is exhibited in a way that is engaging to young minds. Focus will be on proposals incorporating a sense of discovery and interactive play for children and adults alike.

Expressions of interest can respond to either of the two broad themes:

1. The whimsical/ethereal: works can reflect a light-hearted engagement with one of multiple sites with a possible focus on interaction and audience experience.

2. The conceptual: works can reflect and integrate more topical conceptual interests that frame our current socio-political landscape. Works could also reflect on our shifting relationship to technology and its disruptive influence.

Expressions of interest must include a short response to either of the themes (no more than a page), concept sketches and provisional budget indicating whether this is to be funded in part or total by the Spier Arts Trust.

Submission deadline: 3 June 2019

Contact: Nadja at lightart (at )

A more thorough proposal may be requested after the initial short list is announced.

The Spier Arts Trust will fund or part fund the installations chosen by the Selection Committee headed by curator Jay Pather.

Artworks showcased at the first edition of the festival offer creatives ideas for the kinds of works that the Selection Committee are interested in featuring.

It is a 6 square metre booth which can fit 6 - 8 designers.

If they get six designers sharing the cost will be R3,000 for the three days (R1,000 per day) and it will be cheaper if more share the space (up to eight can be accomodated). The event will provide the opportunity for selling your goods, and designers can use their Yoco and Snapscan if you do not have these facilities.

National Craft Awards 2019

Entries are now open for the third Innibos National Premier Craft Awards.

The organisers remain committed to showcasing the excellence in skill of South Africa’s crafters, and in levelling the playing field for entrants by making the entry process as simple as possible.

While there are no entry fees, the overall winner will walk away with R50 000, the first runner-up with R20 000 and the second runner-up with R15 000. In addition, there will be merit awards for the Best Emerging Craftsmen, along with sound financial advice to grow their business.

The competition is held under the auspices of the Innibos National Arts Festival and is organised by Art Aid Africa’s John Anthony Boerma and Jan Bhuda.

The inaugural competition in 2017 attracted almost 800 entries and last year, over 1 000 crafters entered. “This fabulous response reflects the need that existed for a national platform such as the Innibos National Premier Craft Awards,” says John Anthony.

After their years in the industry, as curators and trainers, both John Anthony and Jan expected some amazing entries, but they have been blown away by the diversity of mediums, the creativity of the entries and the technical expertise shown by previous winners and entrants.

All artists in the craft sector are invited to submit entries in the following disciplines: ceramics, beadwork, wirework, wood, jewellery, paper, fabric painting and printing, quilting, leatherwork, pewter, glasswork, embroidery and mixed media.

Sixty entries will be shortlisted and put forward for final judging. The adjudication panel will be announced next year, but as always, the organisers are committed to ensuring that the judges are experts in their field who will uphold the integrity of the competition.

The winners will be announced at an awards evening on Sunday, June 23, at which all 60 shortlisted entries will be displayed. This exhibition will remain open to members of the public for the duration of the annual Innibos National Arts Festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to Nelspruit each year.

Sandra Jacobs, one of the founders of Innibos, says that the craft competition found a natural home with Innibos, which is committed to celebrating not only the performing arts, but the visual arts too. “Craft depicts the soul of a nation,” she said at last year’s prize-giving.

Entering is easy!

Crafters have until April 12, 2019, to enter. They need simply take a photo of their entry – next to a matchbox for size of scale, and either email it to or send it to 071 621 3597 via MMS or WhatsApp. There is no entry fee.

Remember to include your name, the town in which you live and your contact details.

Entrants who have not heard from the organisers within 30 days of the closing date must take it as given that they did not make the shortlist for final judging.

The finalists must be available to attend the awards evening on June 23.

For information, please WhatsApp Jan Bhuda on 071 621 3597 or email John Anthony Boerma at

We hope to connect designers, companies, governments, and educational institutions in fashion and textile as well as, in particular, the audience in this common endeavour. state of fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury primarily aims to provide a stage for (often unknown) initiatives, which aim for an innovative, sustainable and fair form of fashion that still manages to seduce. It also aspires to be a breeding ground for new ideas, create interdisciplinary exchange and bring unexpected partners together. Urgent, critical, provocative and inspiring for professionals, the industry and students, as well as for a wider audience. In so doing, state of Fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury will be the first-large scale international public event dedicated to sustainable and fair fashion. Jose Teunissen is the curator of state of fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury. On 1 June, 2018, the exhibitions and events programme of state of fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury will open in the city of Arnhem, The Netherlands.

OPEN CALL for the exhibition Future Scenarios

During state of fashion 2018 | searching for the new luxury, the exhibition Future Scenarios presents a stimulating anthology of ground-breaking concepts and practices, in which innovation and a new imagination are guiding principles. Through our Open Call, designers, brands and artists are invited to submit ideas and products that are about to break through to the market, or offer new perspectives on the fashion system, or in broader terms, on the things around us with which we interact. Today, not only designers and brands can be so-called drivers of change - an innovative business model or a new vision on social responsibility can also significantly change and improve the fashion chain and make it more sustainable.

Deadline for submissions for the Open Call is September 30, 2017 at 23.59 hours. We kindly invite you to join us.

The festival in 1986 was meant to gather Africa’s most prominent artist as a response from the artistic community to the injustices of the apartheid regime and to firmly root the arts as an instrument to achieve social justice.
