CDI member Mors has had a fruitful and long-standing relationship with the CDI and has benefitted from numerous programmes we offer. O
wner Raihana Govender describes the CDI as “great pillar of strength” and we caught up with her ahead of Mors’ participation at the SARCDA Trade Exhibition this year as part of the CDI’s NEXT18 programme.

Tell us more about Mors

Mors is an up-cycle initiative that started in July 2015. Mors aims at creating a sustainable business by collecting non-toxic waste and creating beautiful, usable and practical products. All Mors products are made from recycled tyre tube, manufactured locally by previously disadvantaged woman and refugees, affording them the opportunity of decent employment.

The Mors range consists of a variety of beautiful handbags, handwoven laptop sleeves, A4 & A5 book covers and chandeliers. All products are handmade of intricately woven, stitched, braided and patched pieces of recycled rubber.

We currently have six people working with Mors.

How has the CDI helped you over the years?

The CDI has been a great pillar of strength over these past few years.

They’ve helped me develop and market my brand, and have given me the guidance and support that, as a new business, I so desperately needed.

There are so many talented designers out there, but unfortunately many are not able to survive -̶  they’re not able to get their brand and product "market ready” and to the next level because they’re not equipped with the knowledge, tools and support -̶  the CDI offers this and I can honestly say that what they offer is invaluable.

I’m not sure where my business would be today if it wasn’t for the CDI and the helpful staff always there to offer the much-needed support, assistance and encouragement.

The programme the CDI runs in partnership with the CBI (
Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries -̶  an Agency of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs) has had such a positive impact on my business. This programme has helped tremendously with the development of my product.

The programmes in general that the CDI offer are so useful and a great platform to meet and network with other designers which is very necessary -̶  exchanging thoughts, ideas and experiences really helps.

How have the CDI events, local/international trade shows we facilitate, and the online product platform Peek.org.za helped you?

The events and trade shows have helped my business immensely. Peek has offered my business exposure to both the international and local market and I’ve had sales and interest from people that I would not have had access to.

CDI shows like the NEXT18 have been such a great marketing platform, and helped me network with buyers and fellow designers, some of whom have had more experience and exposure to both national and international trade shows are kind enough to share their experiences and the “Do’s and Don’ts”.

What’s next for your business this year?

I’ll be attending SARCDA with CDI and CBI  -̶  it’ll be my first time participating in SARCDA and I’m super excited as I’m looking forward to seeing how Mors is received nationally. I’m also doing one international show later in this year.
